Origins is a YouTube explainer series that looks into the history of extreme sports, the communities behind them and how they have gone on to affect the cultures of today. In the summer of 2019, I pitched this concept to Red Bull with the aim to bring together the insane action shots I grew up watching and that Red Bull is known for and this explainer style breakdown of the history and stories behind these sporting cultures.

Unlike my own videos, I do have a small team helping me out to create this show. It is still at its core a YouTube first show and as I've become used to the process of wearing multiple hats it's no different on Origins. I direct, producer, script, host, co-shot and edit the series.

In each episode, I travel to a location with a Red Bull Athlete, DOP and local producer to discover the origins of the sport, to spend time speaking to significant figures in the community and to try out each sport with our athlete and then let them put me to shame and showcase what makes them these world champions.

Episodes 1-4 are available on YouTube, Facebook & Red Bull TV.

Episode 2 | Fencing

Fencing is one of the fastest sports in the world, and to the un-trained eye, it’s hard to follow. With Olympic gold medalist, Olga Kharlan, we slow down the action and look at the fascinating history of this sport, including how 30,000 deaths changed its rules forever.

Episode 3 | Skiing

The origins of skiing trace back to over 8,000 years ago, when skis were used as a form of transportation and a way of survival to navigate the cold regions of the world. With world-class free skier Paddy Graham, we head up to Sweden to look at the fascinating history of skiing, including how the Norwegian army turned it into a competitive sport.
